On September 20th Megan put a new spin on the saying "Put your money where your mouth is". She literally put a quarter in her mouth and then swallowed it. However, the quarter never made it to her stomach. It got stuck in her esophagus, just above the breast bone. So if you find the very top of your breast bone and then move up a little to the soft part of your neck that is where the quarter was stuck in Megan's throat.
Theresa was working so I took Megan to the new ER at St. John's (which by the way is magnificent) and Theresa later joined us. The X-Ray clearly showed the quarter and the doctor decided that they would need to retrieve it or force it into her stomach to be passed naturally. Fortunately they could tell that the quarter had passed the wind pipe so there was no chance that she could begin choking. They prep-ed her for the Operating Room. The doctor used an endoscope to take this picture and then pull the quarter out through her mouth.
I'm sure you are wondering how the quarter got in her mouth in the first place. Well Megan claims that she was holding the quarter (left over lunch money) and had to yawn. When she put her hand to her mouth to cover the yawn the quarter went in. She goes on to say that she only had two choices, choke or swallow the quarter. If you find the story a bit fishy, join the club.
On the way home I asked Megan what she had learned from the incident she said, "I shouldn't yawn with a quarter in my hand." We quickly corrected this to "You shouldn't ever put anything that isn't food in your mouth.'
My friend Bobby now calls her "Our Little Piggy Bank".
Theresa and I are just happy that she is okay.
