A friend was recently reading this blog and mentioned to me that it was brave of me to write about my ThoughtWorks interview. Depending on who you are you might call it brave or you might call it stupid. Personally I just think that it is honest.
First let me say that I have nothing but the greatest respect for ThoughtWorks and ThoughtWorkers. I think that their philosophies on staffing their organization are wonderful and their interviewing process is tough and effective, but fair and balanced. Additionally, ThoughtWorks and many of its ThoughtWorkers are well known and well respected in the IT Community.
I think that you probably feel the proverbial "big but" coming, and you're right. So...
...BUT, by having gone through the interview process with ThoughtWorks I have actually gained more respect for my current employer. Prior to this interview I had not interviewed for a job for more than 6 years. I think that after some period of time, for me it was about 6 years, we can start to lose touch with the reality of how things are outside of your own IT organization. Then all it takes is the right opportunity to come along and lure you out to see if grass is any greener somewhere else.
I'm glad I had a chance to test those waters. I'm even more glad that when I tested the waters I was pleasantly surprised to find that my current job and current employer have a culture, career opportunities, growth opportunities, great friends and a benefits and compensation package that made it incredibly easy for me to choose to stay in my current job.
